After Ann’s biological mother tragically passed away in a car wreck, Ann’s mother’s fiancé filed to share custody of Ann with her biological father, Chris. Despite Chris being fully capable of being the sole and rightful caregiver for Ann, the district judge in this case granted an unrelated man, a virtual stranger, partial custody of Ann.

Despite Chris’s competence as a completely fit parent, on May 8, 2019, he had to start sharing custody of his daughter Ann for nearly 14 months. On June 26, 2020, the Supreme Court of Texas handed down a unanimous opinion that Chris was a fit parent and could decide who would share with him the custody of his daughter Ann.

This was an historic and groundbreaking opinion from the Supreme Court of Texas, and it will likely serve hundreds, if not thousands, of families well in the future. Because of the over 14 months of litigation that Chris and Ann endured, other Texas families might not be ripped apart in the future.
